Chapter Seventeen
The Past Catches Up: Part One
The young woman who entered the courtroom next was almost as elegant and beautiful as Maddison Scott. She wore a pantsuit but made it look like there was no sexier option. The pants hugged her legs, and even though she wore a jacket over a blouse, it managed to align with her, too, and show off her lithe but curvaceous figure.
Maddison had spoken about the woman a lot and had moved back and forth between calling the woman her best friend and also talking about how much she hated her. Maddison went on and on about how she was a horrible person but also that she was the only person in the world who understood her.
Alex had a distinct impression, even before Maddison talked about this woman that she didn't have an easy relationship with anyone.
Haley Gabel was sworn in, and Liam approached her to ask some questions. The suit from the previous two days had been replaced by a dark grey one. It had a softer tone, and Alex didn't know if that was intentional in some wayâif he needed to change the juryâs impression of him.
"Miss Gabel, do you know the defendant?"
"Oh, I know her intimately," Haley said. "I don't mean like that before your mind starts to wander. I mean, we have made out on the dance floor before, but only to attract men to us." She held her hands up in mock surrender. "Alright, there was one time when we wanted to be a woman too. So what; sue me."
Alex knew that any lawyer's patience would already be worn thin by a witness like her, but Liam, to his credit, looked calm and collected. Maybe it was the change of suit.
"How did you meet Maddison Scott?" Liam asked, trying to get to the point.
"We met at business school," Haley said. "A great place to party, but not so much to learn business. Much better to learn business in the real worldâweâve both done pretty well for ourselves. Well, maybe not anymore, but, you know."
"You met in business school, and from your description, Iâm assuming you didnât finish business school," Liam said.
"No, we both dropped out around the same time to party and make our way in the world."
"Would you consider Maddison Scott a friend?" Liam asked.
"At one point, I would have, but I think she got jealous of me. I donât know if we would call ourselves friends anymore, but there is a mutual respect between us."
"Did you keep in contact with Maddison Scott when she started working for Franklin Edwards?" Liam asked.
"Oh, yeah. We would see each other all the time, and even when we were not talking to each other, we still partied together."
"What was your impression of Maddison Scottâs role at the company?" Liam probed.
"The way she talked about it, she would have you believe that she was running the place. I know Maddy, so I know to take everything she says with a grain of salt. Maybe she would have run the place one day, but she wasnât in charge there.
